The school in Bogenstrasse is a solid building by Albert Erbe dating from 1911, both the interior and exterior of which are listed for preservation.
The entire building was completely overhauled without any interruptions to schooling. Special attention was paid to preserving and restoring the original design elements on the exterior façade and in the interior rooms. The historic façade made of large mediaeval bricks is articulated by cornices and window sills made of shell limestone. In close cooperation with the monument preservation authorities, additional or replacement bricks and joints were selected in such a way that they blend inconspicuously into the existing façade. Shell limestone elements were reproduced just as faithfully. Historic windows that were still in place were reconditioned and energetically upgraded with box-type windows. The remaining windows were reproduced on the basis of historical models.
The design basis for the interior overhaul was provided by the historic colour scheme. This was recreated in the entrance hall and translated into a modern colour concept for walls and floors in the other areas.
The guiding principle for the renovation was to give the institution the character of a university, in the sense of encounter, exchange of ideas and independence. The assembly hall was converted into a state-of-the-art multifunctional hall and can also be used now as a canteen or learning space. An openly accessible library for all was created, supplemented by separate, versatile work areas for teachers as well as conference rooms and other niches.
The classes are grouped together as clusters into ‘compartments’ preceded by learning corners, thus allowing an open design as far as fire protection is concerned. Differentiation areas in between take different needs in account and allow inclusive learning to take place, among other things. The top floor there is a level dedicated to natural science, music and art. The art rooms are designed as studios. All the rooms for specific subjects are equipped according to the latest educational findings and requirements.
