Founded in 1984, the open-air theatre in Lilienthal was modernised after more than 30 years. The project was funded by the Lilienthal Open-Air Theatre Association and subsidised by the EU programme ‘Grants for Integrated Rural Development’ (ZILE). The technical and WC building was renovated as a timber post and beam construction with larch cladding. Using wood as a natural building material resonates with the green, rural surroundings of the theatre. An underground system of empty conduits converges at the two-storey technical building, where the stage technology is centrally controlled by the stage staff. This system can be retrofitted, which means that new leads can be installed at a later date.
The newly designed audience area seating 500 can be used as an event space in versatile ways. The benches can be dismantled to create a dance floor in front of the stage for open-air concerts. A roof over the auditorium is to be built in a second construction phase in a few years’ time.
