John-F.-Kennedy-Platz secondary school, Brunswick

The building housing the John-F.-Kennedy-Platz secondary school is divided into two parts – a main building and an annex that are grouped around the schoolyard. The main building is a solid listed construction dating from 1911, whereas the annex dates from 1969.

The primary renovation objective was to adapt the building to current fire protection standards and to create a second escape route. The existing sports hall was also converted into assembly room, and the administrative area was modified to meet new requirements placed on schools.

Due to very limited space in a densely built inner-city location, the school was renovated in eight construction phases while still in operation. We also took over the planning of the move and the construction management for the erection of three-storey containers as classrooms.

The school profile of the secondary school at John-F.-Kennedy Platz in Brunswick is centred on self-reliant and cooperative learning and on a creating a non-violent school.

In the course of renovation, self-contained class clusters preceded by learning zones and learning niches. Public areas and open spaces were so designed that they foster a lively school life while also providing quiet areas to withdraw to, depending on individual needs.

Outdoors, the rotunda was rebuilt and now functions as an outdoor classroom. The ground floor canteen was designed like a snack bar in order to create a room with a high sojournal quality where one can enjoy a relaxed chat with others The sports hall, now with optimised acoustics and lighting, provides space for larger gatherings. Particular attention was also paid to the structural requirements for inclusion and accessibility.
