Humanities Institute Bremerhaven

The futuristic, organic architecture expresses the progressive aspirations of this new tertiary institute for educational science. The design aims for transparency and variability, and its proportions and surfaces fit into the urban environment in a striking yet harmonious way. The building ties in with the natural green axis extending from the Geeste river to the town park in Lehe.

To enhance the cityscape, we decided to keep to the existing block structure. The height of the building is based on the surrounding buildings. At the same time, the design creates an urban accent in the Goethe quarter and can be read as a large sculpture.

The guiding concept is that the Saar park can continue to develop on the greened roof of the building. A flowing, public space thus ensues. The building is transparent and creates a modern learning environment whose interconnected teaching spaces are accessible to the public. The curved shape supports the dynamics of the building with its flexible floor plans. The construction costs were between 40 and 50 million Euro.
