The three-storey edifice was built as a school building in the historicist style between 1872 and 1875 according to plans by Alexander Schröder, a senior government building officer. Its three parallel wings are grouped around two inner courtyards. It has been used since 1987 by the Faculty of Music at the Bremen University of the Arts.
Renovation of the listed building involved repairing thee façade, which had been heavily soiled and damaged by weathering. Before any work was carried out, the damage was precisely catalogued and analysed, and the specific measures necessary were determined on the basis of prototypical areas. The main focus was on using analogous materials to the original.
These extensive repairs meant that the façade could be restored while largely preserving the original substance and reconstructing its historic appearance.
